I believe God was preparing my heart for the battle I was eventually going to face with Matthew…

I didn’t know what was coming. I certainly wouldn’t have chosen it. But God knew.

Those earlier struggles taught me to pray differently, trust differently, and recognize that sometimes we don’t understand what God is doing while we’re living through it. Only later can we look back and see how He was preparing us for something we couldn’t yet see.

Then came Matthew’s diagnosis.

For 18 months, I wrote about diagnoses, treatments, MRIs, doctors, setbacks, victories, fear, hope, prayer, and ultimately the loss of our son. But somewhere along the way, those posts became about much more than cancer.

They became about God

I began seeing God in places I might have overlooked before—in doctors and nurses, friends who showed up at exactly the right moment, prayers from complete strangers, unexpected conversations, sunrises, thunderstorms, and even in some of the darkest days of our lives.

One message continued to become clearer:

GOD IS GREATER THAN THE HIGHS AND THE LOWS.

Greater than cancer. Greater than fear. Greater than disappointment. Greater than the questions I can’t answer. Greater than grief. Greater than death itself.

Matthew’s journey changed the way I understand faith. I learned that faith isn’t believing God will always give us the outcome we desperately want. Faith is trusting God even when He doesn’t.

I prayed for Matthew to be healed. Thousands of people prayed with us. And while the healing I wanted was for Matthew to remain here with us, I believe Matthew ultimately received a healing far greater than anything medicine could have provided.

That doesn’t mean I have all the answers. I don’t.

I’m grieving. I’m learning. I’m asking questions. And I’m still discovering what it means to trust God when life doesn’t make sense.

That’s why I created Faith According to Kevin.

This isn’t a website written by a theologian or someone claiming to have Christianity figured out. I’m a husband, a father, a businessman, and most importantly, a dad whose son taught me more about faith the past 18 monthsthan I could have learned in a lifetime.

This site is simply my perspective.

I want to continue the conversation that began through my CaringBridge posts—sharing what I’m learning, where I see God working, the questions I still wrestle with, and the lessons Matthew continues to teach me.

I also want to talk about the things we sometimes don’t recognize until later—the possibility that the difficult season you’re walking through today may be preparing your heart for something God knows is coming tomorrow.

I don’t believe God wasted those dark days in my life.

I believe He used them to prepare me.

And when the greatest battle of my life arrived, I wasn’t prepared because I was strong enough.

I was prepared because my faith had already taught me where to turn.

Most importantly, if someone finds this site during their own darkest season, I hope Matthew’s story helps them understand something that took me years to learn:

You don’t have to understand God’s plan to trust Him.

Matthew’s cancer journey changed our family forever. It also changed my faith forever.

And if sharing our journey causes even one person to ask questions about Jesus, open a Bible, return to their faith, or simply start looking for God in the middle of their own storm, then Matthew is still doing what he did throughout his life—making a difference in the lives of others.

This is Faith According to Kevin.

I don’t have all the answers. But I know where I’m looking for them.

GOD IS GREATER THAN THE HIGHS AND THE LOWS.

SAME GOD. EVERY SEASON.
